Matrix Community Retreat Asia 2025

Following the success of the Matrix Retreat in Austria 2024, we are organizing the next iteration: a workation for those passionate about Matrix, messengers, and distributed technology. This is an excellent opportunity to collaborate with like-minded professionals in a productive yet relaxed environment.
It will take place on Ko Pha-ngan (เกาะพะงัน), an island in Thailand, starting after FOSDEM 2025 and culminating in a Matrix Community Events dispatch at FOSSASIA.

For Matrix' 10th birthday in 2024, The Matrix.org Foundation aimed to realise the long time dream of the its founders to host their own official conference solely focused on Matrix. After The Matrix.org Foundation had already successfully teamed up with Matrix Community Events earlier in the year at FOSDEM, a high concentration of commercial players in the Matrix ecosystem in Germany, and the already established Community Summits, Berlin was an obvious choice.
The first ever Matrix Conference took place from September 19th to 22nd, 2024, at Mitosis LAB in Berlin, Germany. Building on the Matrix Community Summits, it brought together the community with vendors, consumer organisations, and other commercial players.

Matrix Community Retreat 2024

Workation-Nation 0.1 "Matrix Re-Treated" was a unique event dedicated to exploring and developing the Matrix communication protocol immediately following FrOSCon 19 from August 19th until September 2nd, 2024, at the bed and breakfast Schwarzes Rössl in Krems an der Donau, Austria.
For two weeks with extremely sunny weather, the old BnB was transformed into a hybrid co-working space with outdoor area and a hacking workshop with LEDs and other controllable lighting appliances, soldering irons, and pickaxes.

The huge success of and positive feedback to the Matrix Community Summit 2022 made clear there was interest in repeating the event. And so a year later, the second Matrix Community Summit from September 21st to 24th, 2023, again at c-base in Berlin, Germany. The format mostly followed the 2022 Summit with some small tweaks.
Again we kicked off the event with the BarCamp on Thursday the 21st, this time using the matrix-barcamp widget following the success at the FOSDEM 2023 Matrix Community Meetup. For the two following conference days we scaled down from previously 3 to now 2 rooms to reduce cross-talk between 2 of the stages. The schedule is available here. On the other side, we found some media sponsors who enabled us to stream and record the main stage, now available through a playlist on the Matrix.org YouTube. We concluded again with the Open Door Day on Sunday the 24th, including a vegan Weisswurst breakfast.
Besides the media sponsors, we were lucky to also again have sponsors from multiple companies in the ecosystem, so we could continue to offer free drinks, all day long breakfast, and warm dinners to all attendees.

Matrix Community Summit 2022

The first Matrix Community Summit took place from August 25th to 28th, 2022, at c-base in Berlin, Germany.
We started with a BarCamp on Thursday the 25th, which is an open format for participatory workshops and discussion that allows all attendees to exchange on topics provided by them during an introductory session. Friday the 26th and Saturday the 27th were the main conference days with talks and workshops spread across 3 rooms, the schedule for which is available here. We concluded on Sunday the 28th with the Open Door Day which allowed for even less formal discussion and collaboration with the new contacts made during the conference.
Naturally, Matrix was used as a communication tool, and the event's Matrix space is archived at #matrix-summit-berlin-2022:c-base.org.
The sponsorship by several companies in the ecosystem allowed us to offer free drinks, all day long breakfast, and warm food in the evening to all attendees.
As far as we know, this was the first multi-day event focused solely on Matrix and kicked off a series of community-organised events that eventually led to the formalisation of the Matrix Community Events group as a ecosystem member of The Matrix Foundation.
